Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter April 2008

Welcome

The sun is shining, the snow is nearly all gone and we think it is safe to say that spring has arrived!

Now that the weather is warmer and the sun is out a whole hour longer, there are plenty of things to do! Horse enthusiasts may now ride their equine friends without getting frostbitten noses. If you live in Nevada like Sam and Terri, there are millions of places to go on a great hike. You might even be able to spot a wild horse on your path!

We hope everyone had a nice relaxing spring break and soaked up plenty of sunshine outside. What did you do during your spring vacation? Take a trip to Hawaii with your family? Did you spot any paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys!) like the ones Terri job shadowed? Or did you just stay home and take it easy? Let us know how you spent your spring break from school and it may be posted on the Phantom Web site. As always, be sure to get your parent's permission first. We will post your first name, state and spring break plans.

Remember to check Terri's calendar to see if she'll be signing books or presenting at a bookstore in your hometown!

Don't forget, you can send you friends an e-postcard of your favorite Phantom Stallion book.

Take a look at some new horse photos in the photo album .

Happy trails!

Terri Farley Speaks during "Americans Against Horse Slaughter Week"

(RENO, Nev.) - Best-selling author, Terri Farley, joined with the Humane Society of the United States and spoke to anti-slaughter supporters, celebrities and lawmakers on March 4. "Americans Against Horse Slaughter Week" attendees met with their representatives and key congressional leaders to push for the passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) (HR.503 / S.311). There are enough bipartisan votes to pass this legislation when it reaches the floor of Congress.

Farley met with those involved in trying to pass this legislation. She saw hours of video shot by people and was heartbroken by what she saw.

"This is a horror for horses and dangerous work for the young men hired to kill horses day after day. They're not veterinarians. Their hacking is hit-and-miss and the horses that are able to, strike back," Farley said. "No one has a right to inflict such torture on a living thing, purely for profit."

Farley, author of the 24-book series "Phantom Stallion," and the newly released "Phantom Stallion Wild Horse Island" series, is an active wild horse advocate and anti-slaughter supporter. Farley invited her fans to write to their legislators and show their support for anti-slaughter and her readers responded. Farley delivered more than 200 letters to the offices of Sen. Harry Reid, Sen. John Ensign, Sen. Arlen Specter and Sen. Robert Casey.

The AHSPA presently has 193 cosponsors in the House and 38 cosponsors in the Senate. Of particular significance, the top candidates for president, Senators Clinton, McCain and Obama, are all cosponsors of the legislation.

I rode Penny today! Brynna felt guilty because her mare wasn't getting enough exercise, so she asked me to help out. I've got to admit, I was a little worried. I love Penny, but riding a blind horse is different. I wasn't wrong about that, but it turned out to be different in a good way.

Did you know?

During the 1950s in Nevada, Velma B. Johnston, later known as Wild Horse Annie, became aware of the ruthless and indiscriminate manner in which wild horses were being gathered on the rangelands. Ranchers, hunters and "mustangers" played a major role in harvesting wild horses for meat.

Wild Horse Annie led a grass roots campaign that got the public fully engaged in the issue. Newspapers published articles about the exploitation of wild horses and burros.

In January 1959, Nevada Congressman Walter Baring introduced a bill prohibiting the use of motorized vehicles to hunt wild horses and burros on all public lands. The House of Representatives unanimously passed the bill which became known as the "Wild Horse Annie Act." (information is from www.blm.gov)
