Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter April 2009 Spring is a time of new birth, but life isn't always easy for wild horses. Last Sunday, a young filly, borne to a wild mustang mare on the Wild Horse Sanctuary (home to the real Phantom Stallion) in Shingletown, California, proved without a doubt that mustangs are a tough breed. On Sunday, March 19, 2009, two volunteers from the Sanctuary were riding fences and checking the ranch when Tara spotted trouble. Alone on a hill, a tiny foal lay beside her unmoving mother.
Tara and Palomino rode over to find that the foal, later named "Chilly Pepper" was approximately 3 days old, and had most likely been alone since a short time after she was born. The filly, who had apparently been tended to immediately following her birth, was severely dehydrated and had been out in the snow and rain for at least two nights alone, cuddled up to her dead mother. She was a very fragile little filly. Her rescue was a joint effort, with Palomino riding out to bring back her husband Matt, son Travis, and a truck to pick up the newborn. Tara, knowing time was critical if the filly was going to live, simply picked her up, placed her on her shoulders and began to carry her down the mountain towards help, while still leading her horse Rillo. Chilly Pepper suffered severe hypothermia and dehydration. She is on antibiotics and living with Palomino and her family.
She gets round the clock care, eating a little bit every hour, and is watched over by two dogs -- a German shepherd and a Doberman -- as well as her human family. Two days ago, she finally stood up on her own!
This just in . . . Ready to see a wild horse rescue in action? This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6KHcA2u4Xw shows the rescue of a mustang foal caught in a fence Silver Springs, Nevada. While his wild mama looks on, humans disentangle him from the wire and wash out the little guy's wounds. At the end of the film, you can see the foal rejoin his mother and then gallop off to find their herd! Jake and his brothers got together to pull an April Fool's Day prank on me this morning. It was pretty funny, and not nearly as bad as it could have been! Where is Terri Farley?
