Average life expectancy of a domestic horse: 20 - 30 years
Average life expectancy of a wild horse 15 - 20

The oldest horse ever according to the Guiness Book of World Records lived to be 51, but a present day horse owner in North Carolina claims that her Grand Mogul, a Thoroughbred, is 52 years old.

This just in . . .

The wild horses have lots of friends and, on July 22, they came out to support them in Carson City, Nevada.

Above, you'll see a poster carried by Palomino, a seven year volunteer at the Wild Horse Sanctuary of Shingletown, CA., showing before and after photos of Chilly Pepper, the orphan she saved from freezing and starvation. In Nevada, foals like Chilly have been cared for by volunteers. Under the current Director of Agriculture, that may stop.

Even on a midweek 100 degree day, wild horse advocates turned out to inform voters and government officials about misappropriation of funds that the legislature awarded the Nevada Department of Agriculture for overseeing wild horses. Here, Bonnie Matton (her back's to you, but she's wearing her patriotic cowgirl hat!) gets ready to deliver petitions to the governor's office.

Above, Terri Farley cuddles with Spirit. He's the wild horse companion of Betty Retzer (in helmet) and he's painted with "jailbird" stripes because so many of his mustang family members have been unjustly given life sentences in captivity.

Update from July:

Last month the Phantom Stallion newsletter gave a list of helpful hints for getting a job working with horses and those tips worked for you!

Here's a letter from one happy reader:

Dear Terri,

YES! I got a job at a stable. The first day I was there I wore a grey t-shirt, a pair of work jeans, and sturdy boots. Anita, the owner, talked to me and said I could spend the day and help out if I wished. Of course I wanted to help. The instructor, Jessie, sowed me what needed to be done(i.e. the water buckets scrubbed out, stalls cleaned and the mare barn aisle swept) and I did them all. Anita asked me to come back the next day( Saturday the 4 of July) to talk to and help the manager. Well I went and had a blast. Trish(that's the manager) said that they were going to keep after my week of trial. for the summer I'm exchanging work for lessons until another stable hand goes back to school in the fall.

I'm so pleased, I'm working with Paso's, quarter horses, and a few other mixed breeds. the stable is Chalakee Ranch home of national champion Zorro de Lego.

Thank you so much Terri for your tips on applying for a job at a stable.

If you want to share my success with other readers, by all means, do so. so it will encourage others to try and see where they can go with these tips.

Your Horse Loving friend
Carrie

Sam's blog

We've had lots of summer storms and the horses have been kicking up their heels and splashing around every time the rain stops.

But Dad hasn't enjoyed the weather quite as much. He's been spending more time inside than he likes, and he started talking about getting ready to go back to school. On the first day of August!
