Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter August 2008

Welcome

Has anyone attended a Rodeo this summer? They're happening all over the country right now in big and small towns. One event usually featured is Barrel Racing. Barrel Racing is a rodeo event that demands some of the most athletic horses and dedicated riders. Success can be defined in terms of financial earnings, or more simply, pattern completion and fastest time.

The competition requires the rider and the horse to safely and successfully maneuver their horses in a clover leaf pattern around three barrels placed in a triangle in the center of an arena. The timer begins when horse and rider cross the start line, and ends when the barrel pattern has been successfully executed and horse and rider cross the finish line. Barrel racing is as exciting to watch as it is to ride, well maybe not as exciting as riding in it but it comes very close.

Barrel racing originally developed as an event for women. While their husbands roped or rode bulls and broncos, the women barrel raced. The Girls Rodeo Association (GRA), instituted in 1949, was the first body of rodeo developed specifically for women and are said to have introduced barrel racing in Texas. Women were allowed to compete in several events of rodeo. The GRA eventually officially became the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) in 1981, and although women are allowed to compete in the various rodeo events as they like, barrel racing remains the most popular event of competition.

The WRPA is now one of the largest rodeo sanctioning bodies in the world and is open exclusively to women eighteen years of age and older.

Today Gram came home singing from her volunteer job at the Pegasus Horse Therapy Center for kids with disabilities. She made us chocolate milk shakes too, and promised to go riding out to the river with me tonight. And it was all because of Sweetheart.

Did you know?

Did you know that there are over 300 breeds of horses? Some are wild, and some are domesticated. Some are full-size horses and some are considered ponies. But they are all horses and they are all beautiful animals! Many breeds are based on their coloring alone! (www.horsechannel.com)
