Terri's paniolo stories have been brewing since she first read about them in 4th grade history class. Just as the Phantom Stallion series grew from her experiences on a ten day cattle drive across the Black Rock Desert, the Wild Horse Island books grew from her experiences living on Dahana Ranch, a native-owned ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii. There, Terri job shadowed paniolos under the guidance of Harry Nakoa, a third generation Paniolo. From 5 AM until after dark, Terri rode the volcanic slopes of Mauna Kea, learning "island riding," unique horse care and general ranch maintenance in a completely new and beautiful environment. Terri drove cattle, rode increasingly demanding horses each day and listened with fascination to Nakoa's ancient Island legends.
Terri usually traveled alone, however, focusing on her own role as an outsider. It is this "outsider's perspective" that she gave to the main character, 13-year old Darby Carter, of her new series Phantom Stallion Wild Horse Island. Sam's blog The holidays are my absolute favorite time of year. And not just because of the presents (although those are okay, too), but because I just love the winter. Everything about this time of year makes me happy. Read more. Where is Terri Farley?
