Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter December 2009

Dear Readers,

The Phantom Stallion roams the Calico Mountains. He is our dream horse -- yours and mine -- but the mountains are real and home to many living wild horses.

For now.

On December 28, BLM will send helicopters up over the snowy range, searching out wild horses -- for three winter months!

I have been in the Calico Mountains in winter. The days are bleak and the nights are bitter cold, but the horses know how to stay warm until helicopters whip up blizzards of fresh snow with their rotors, and drive the mustangs galloping from their hiding places onto the slippery snow and ice.

Foals will fall behind. Horses will be injured. Some may die. This is not a story. This is the truth.

Please help STOP THE CALICO ROUNDUP

  1. Tell BLM why wild horses are important to you
  2. Draw colorful pictures of wild horses
  3. Ask your parents for permission to mail as MANY LETTERS AND PICTURES AS YOU WANT to: Terri Farley, 565 California Avenue, Reno, Nevada 89509
  4. I will deliver them for you! I promise.

I hope you are warm and cozy and I know the wild horses are thankful for you, and would tell you if they could.

Love,

Terri

Sam's blog

"They've spotted horses," Brynna said this afternoon as she reined Penny to a stop. The blind mare gave a worried nicker. Ace straightened to his full fourteen hand height. Snow crunched as he shifted from hoof to hoof. Then, he shivered. Did he rememberĘthat sound from his last day of freedom? We'd ridden out to shake off the warmth from the house and the fullness from too many holiday cookies.

It was supposed to be a nice break for my stepmother and me, and it was, until we noticed a silver flicker in the sky.
