Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter June 2008

Welcome

Summer is almost here and many of you are probably thinking about going on a family vacation, riding your bike or horse, going swimming, reading, sleeping in -- the list goes on and on! Some of you may even be thinking about earning some money this summer by opening a lemonade stand, hosting a yard sale, walking a neighbor's dog, or doing extra chores.

A summer job can be very rewarding and so can HOW you save or spend your earnings. Saving for college or a car is very long term but will pay off in the end. Something more immediate like a saddle or a pair of boots or the latest music could be nice, too! Best of all, is donating to a worthy cause. If you want to pass on your good fortune by giving money to an organization that benefits horses and other animals and you have your parents' permission, here are some groups Terri trusts:

The Wild Horse Sanctuary
Home of the real Phantom! This sanctuary not only rescues wild horses, they take rides out so that people can see them AND when you get older, you might be able to get one of their summer internships to work with wild horses!!!

Animal Angels Horse Rescue
Terri has seen the work these people do -- following behind trucks that take horses for slaughter and documenting the abuse so no one can say ... Naw, that's not true! ... They can use our help.

Rescuers of the Phantom, Guardians of His Territory

The Humane Society of the United States
They protect all animals. Not only do they go into Senators' offices, they go into slaughter houses and puppy mills. AMAZING people!

American Horse Defense Fund
This group goes to court, Congress, etc., on behalf of the horses and always has up-to-date news on the fight to protect equinesÑdomesticated and free.

Last Chance Ranch
If you've read Terri's blog, you know about the orphan foals they help.

The Cloud Foundation
Documentary film maker, Ginger Kathrens, does all she can to protect Cloud and his herd.

Wild Horse Spirit Ltd
Terri has done hands on work with these ladies and the wild horses they rescue.

If you have plans to work this summer and earn some money let us know how. It may be posted on the Phantom Web site. As always, be sure to get your parents' permission first. We will post your first name, state and what you plan to do this summer.

Sam's blog

The spring thaw usually uncovers green grass, wild flowers and boulders scrubbed clean by rough weather. This year when the snow melted in the high country, it uncovered something else. Pepper found a skeleton. It wasn't a horse or a cow or a coyote. It was a human.

Did you know?

The natural structure of a family of horses is the band. The dominant stallion is the boss. His role is to protect his band from danger and increase his harem of mares and foals. The band is led in its daily routine of grazing and watering by the lead mare.

We know from Sam's tales of the Phantom that wild horses are shy creatures and must be approached with caution. A wild horse's natural instinct for defense is flight, but a stallion can show aggression when he fears his family is being threatened. Enjoy viewing the horses but do not attempt to chase or feed them.
