Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter June 2011

Dear Readers,

Phantom's Pride, photo by Liz Juenke, May 2011

Happy June!

Does this beautiful mustang stallion look familiar?

He's Phantom's Pride, son of the real Phantom Stallion. Some of you remember him as this little black foal (photo by Palomino Armstrong, Feb. 2007). You may even have entered the contest to name him.

Phantom's Pride lives on 5,000 fenced acres at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, California. Expelled from his family band -- as most young stallions are -- he now has a small herd of his own and that's exciting for many reasons.

When the first Phantom Stallion book was published, some people laughed at the idea that such a young stallion could have a herd of his own. And some critics refused to believe a black foal could grow up to be a white stallion, even if he passed through a transitional color shift of silver gray, like the surface of the moon.

Look at Pride! He's proving fiction & fact aren't always that far apart.

I took this photo of the Phantom, Shy and their foal Raincloud on the day after they were captured.

Raincloud and Pride really do look like brothers, don't they?

FATHER'S DAY

Want a good reason to celebrate in June? Don't forget Father's Day on June 19. I am a big fan of letting moms who act as both parents celebrate Father's Day, too.

One of the best gifts I every gave my Dad was pretty much free to give. It was a little hand-made booklet of coupons (pieces of notebook paper stapled together with a decorated -- with horses, what else? -- construction paper cover) that he could redeem for treats or chores.

Feel free to borrow this idea! What should you put in it? Think of chores your father hates, plus hobbies & foods he loves!

In my coupon book, there was a promise to do housework without moaning. That one was redeemed right away, but I did put a time limit on it! My dad loves peanut butter sandwiches, so several coupons were for peanut butter sandwich delivery: to the yard, his lunch box, or the home office. My dad is an amateur astronomer, and he was working on hand-grinding a lens for a telescope (a really boring job), so I made a coupon for two hours of grinding.

Important Story:

Last month I was lucky enough to meet many Canadian readers! I visited Bright's Grove Elementary School, attended & taught at the Niagara Falls Writers Conference sponsored by SCBWI Canada. There were lots of great writers, artists, and an editor and agent, there. Here are two of my favorite photos.

On Saturday night of the conference, I was lucky that a long-time reader, Linda, dropped in to say "hi!"

I not only enjoyed meeting and talking with her, but I was impressed with what Linda is doing and I wanted to share with you.

Linda & Razor

Linda is researching Join-Up and Natural Horsemanship for a psychology class! She is working with Razor, a 3 year old registered Paint gelding. Razor isn't yet trained to saddle and as Linda says, she and the young horse are "setting out on a journey together in hopes of achieving a long lasting relationship."

After reading "The Soul of a Horse" by Joe Camp, Linda wanted to examine the process of bonding with a horse via TRUST, not force, and she will videotape their progress.

This just in . . .

Isn't this mustang foal a sweetie? Her name is Suri (short for Survivor), and she was found alone on Nevada's Virginia Range, once home to the real Phantom.

Her rescuers believe she has been without her mother for five days.

Now, Palomino Armstrong (wild horse angel to Chilly Pepper & Honey Bandit) has taken her in. Although Suri was severely dehydrated and her heart rate is abnormally low, Palomino and her family, especially her husband Matt, are fighting for this baby's life.

Here's my most recent note from Palomino:

Suri is hanging in there. She is still exhausted, and completely without energy, but she reminds me of HB because she LOVES TO EAT.

She still has temperature issues. Today she was out in the sun, warm as can be, and all of a sudden her temperature dropped to 96. So we took her back to the stall and she was in her blanky and enjoying the heat lamps.

Her little legs have been like ice cubes, which is very dangerous, so we put her in leg warmers. But, finally I used my brain and put a light strip of vet wrap at the top of her leg warmers, which helped to hold them on. She was very chic, matching leg warmers and pretty red vet wrap at the top.

Suri is still having trouble getting up and down, but we are pretty sure it is just from exhaustion and we're expecting her to eat her way to lots of energy.

She whinnies every time you go near her, and for a couple of seconds showed that she is a wild foal and can be quite feisty.

She is learning to lead a little bit. Normally I wouldn't start with a halter on their head, as pulling on it can remind them of a mountain lion that would pull down their head to kill them. But we had to improvise with her, and she is doing well. Like all the rest of the mustangs, she is extremely smart.

Sam's blog

I was with Jen today when she turned into someone else. Of course, a horse made her do it.

Jen's always wanted to be an equine veterinarian and, since she's a science goddess, Dr. Scott, the vet, lets her be his unofficial intern. Mostly she observes, but sometimes she's his assistant, too.
