Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter March 2010
Dear Readers,
Since my last newsletter, I've visited our captive wild horses at the BLM holding facility
twice. Both times I returned heartsore, but I know we must keep going, keep observing, keep
proving to BLM that we remember, each morning when we open our eyes that they have taken
1922 mustangs from their homes and shattered their families. We have to let them know we're
aware that at least 75 horses have died and 40 mares have had foals born too early to survive
because their mothers were run so hard by the helicopters.
I'm sharing some photos from Mark Terrell, an amazing wild horse photographer who accompanied
me. If you'd like to read notes from my visits, visit
my blog and read these days,
especially: February 11, 18 and 23.
If you can pull on your emotional armor, you'll find BLM's daily notes about their handling of
the wild horses very revealing.
Terri is working to see that these horses will be returned to the range before their wild spirits are broken. BLM is the largest land holder in the world. There is room for mustangs.
This Medicine Hat stallion has inspired Terri to begin new wild horse stories written from his viewpoint. In her imagination, he is named Ghost Dancer.
Phantom Stallion reader and talented artist Rachel Yoder has shared her work with me before,
but I don't think anything has affected me more than her most recent creation.
DEAR MRS. FARLEY,
I LOVE HORSES WITH ALL MY HEART BUT MY FAMILY CAN'T AFFORD TO BUY ME ONE AND EVEN IF THEY COULD, WE'D HAVE NO PLACE TO KEEP HER. OR HIM.
I CRY EVERY NIGHT BECAUSE I LOVE HORSES SO MUCH AND I WANT TO HELP THE MUSTANGS.
SO I AM ASKING YOU WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WHEN YOU WERE A KID AND WANTED HORSES SO BAD? PLEASE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN HELP!!!
LOVE,
Dear Readers,
Every day I get letters like the one above, so I thought I'd send you all my answer, in case you feel much the same.
I totally understand how much you love horses and you may be someone,
like me, who will never outgrow the longing to be with them,
Several of my suggestions will require your parents' permission -- but
not their money!
Let's start here: if you are allowed to tell me which town and state
you live in, or just your zip code, I'll be happy to check with my
friends and see if there are any horse sanctuaries near you. If so, you
might be able to help out there and believe me the horses will soak up
your love and the people who care for the horses will appreciate your
help.
If there's no sanctuary near by, you might be able to work at a riding
stable. That's what I did, and I loved being around the horses even
though it was hard work. I learned a lot about the horses, too.
A HUGE opportunity you have, which I didn't, is the Internet. If you
want to help horses, it helps to educate yourself so that you can speak
with your head AND your heart!
Please read my blog, and I will
keep you updated on what's happening with horses in need. A lot of time
I'll just show you who to write to, or where to vote in an online poll,
but everything helps.
Here are two other places where you can learn how to help the wild
horses: http://thecloudfoundation.org/ and
http://www.madeleinepickens.com/
In my books, you've read about Jen and Sam trying to find stolen horses
and there are real life organizations which do this. If you'd like to
help, check out http://www.netposse.com/.
For fun, you might go to GirlsHorseClub.com, where you can "meet"
people who love horses as much as you do. Many people there don't have
horses, but they write about them and dream about them. This month there are BUNCH of beautiful stories and poems about wild horses!
Are you on Facebook? If you are, you can check out

Please keep loving and reading about horses!
Horse hugs to you,
Terri

Travis Hernandez & Dylan Duncan with Terri at the peaceful "honk for horses" demonstration in Reno, Nevada. Clearly, not all horse lovers are girls :)
and, oh yeah, Travis' mom is Palomino, human mother to Chilly Pepper the Miracle Mustang and yep, it was pretty chilly out there. Chilly Pepper (almost 1) stayed home.
Sam's blog
This is so cool!
Today in English we were assigned to write a slang dictionary! We have a week to do it, but the minute I got back to River Bend and heard Pepper shouting at Ace, I knew COWBOY SLANG would be the perfect project for me.

Visual artists are invited to submit images for consideration for Horse HeART, a special event celebrating the
spirit of art and horses.
Horse HeART seeks equine art that evokes qualities shared by mustangs and artists: resilience, adaptability,
power, beauty, wildness, freedom, and intelligence.
Event will run March 12 through April 12 at Art Attack Gallery in upscale Incline Village, NV, located on
Lake Tahoe. Proceeds from a fundraiser raffle and a portion of art sales will benefit the Let 'Em Run
Foundation, a non-profit organization co-founded by country-western singer Lacy J. Dalton that works to
preserve wild horses. For more information and to view the Prospectus, please visit www.tahoeartgallery.com
