Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter November 2011
Dear Readers,
Please never forget how thankful I am for you, even when I've been slow getting my newsletters out. and answering your letters and email. You're part of my extended family, so I owe you an explanation. Since summer, my husband Cory has been in the hospital. I spent those months beside him, often sleeping in his hospital room while my children, father, brother and friends took care of my animals. Even on nights I came home, I didn't do much writing. I hugged my animals (except for Fluffy the goldfish), then did mindless things like watching television and playing computer games. You can probably guess that's not my usual behavior, but my heart and head were pretty worn out. Our sweet old cat Sherlock died of old age while Cory was gone, and that was hard for everyone, especially Zito, our dog, who suddenly had no company except for Fluffy. Cory's life has been in danger before. He was a Green Beret medic who parachuted into battle to patch people up. In fact, his illness is likely related to deadly chemicals used in warfare. I would not have made a good warrior's wife in any time period, but I'm all right at listening to doctors and nurses, taking notes, bringing books and treats to a bedside. My husband is home now. He cooked almost the entire Thanksgiving feast. Zito is as delighted as the rest of the family & Cory is doing GREAT! His recovery came just in time, because the Calico Mountain mustangs are in trouble again (more facts and photos below) and I have a new, enthusiastic literary agent named Abigail who wants to see moreof my stories right now! My holiday gift to you will come next month. I'll share a new wild horse story and give you a survey to fill out about future books. OK? Thanks so much for you patience and understanding. My family can still use your prayers and good thoughts. Hugs to each and every one of you! Terri Don't forget, you can send you friends an e-postcard of your favorite Phantom Stallion book. Here's Zito in her Halloween costume. Of course she was a cowgirl!
This just in . . . Calico Mountain Mustangs under attack AGAIN!
New York Times photo Most readers know that the wild and colorful mustangs of the Calico Mountains in the PHANTOM STALLION books are based on the real wild horses which roamed the real Calico range. These mustangs are almost wiped out.
Dawn on the Playa, before the Death Birds come They have been under attack by the BLM-hired contractors for years, almost constantly since 2009. BLM stopped the last round-up because they could find no more wild horses to capture in Nevada. When I returned to the Calico Mountains with Craig Downer, wildlife biologist, we saw almost no wild horses except for the skeleton below. Still, BLM is paying "helicopter cowboys" for another round-up. It began just before Thanksgiving and this time they are allowed to go outside Nevada, into other states. Already a palomino mare has been destroyed.
Run for your lives! Most people don't have a lot of extra money right now. Neither does our government. Please share the following information with people who care about other species AND the budget. Rounding up wild horses and burros costs over $65 million each year. BLM has equine experts on its payroll, but pays companies to do wild horse work for them. Wild horses and burros are healthy on the range; they cost virtually nothing roaming free. Wild horses and burros graze on grass and brush, helping to reduce costly wildfires. Wild horses' natural predators such as mountain lions are often killed as pests by paid hunters. Most of us care about more than money. Consider what 40-50 days of men and machines, chasing mustangs, will do to1,041,000 acres of American range. Consider horses' legs and necks breaking as they fall on icy hillsides, fleeing the terror from above. Young and old horses are often run to death by "helicopter cowboys" paid for capturing horses dead or alive. People who don't want their tax dollars spent this way are honoring the 40th anniversary of the Free Roaming Wild Horse & Burro Act, but they're also trying to halt the Calico round-up before those mountain mustangs disappear forever. Here are two ways you can help even if you're not a voter: Sign this petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-calico-roundup Help stand vigil http://keeptheirlightshining.wordpress.com/
Stolen: Gems of the Range
This Calico Mountain mustang didn't survive the round-up two years ago. Since her leg bones sit apart from her body, her hoof was likely caught in the cattle guard, and her leg bones snapped with the momentum of her gallop as she fled helicopters chasing her herd. Craig Downer Photo Who's Standing up for Horses? Shirley Allen, Cat Kindsfather, Bonnie Matton, Betty Retzer, Willis Lamm and many more went to the state capitol to protest legislation which would legalize slaughter of wild and tame horses

My friend Palomino Armstrong and her family rescued this foal from being destroyed at the BLM corrals after his mother was misplaced. After thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of skilled, loving care, here's yearling Honeybandit with Palomino's husband Matt.
Sam's blog - Encore Edition (November 2008) Wow, I wonder if it's really true. I just read something about the Dosanko horse of Japan that sounds like fantasy. Here's how it happened... Where is Terri Farley?
