Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter September 2009

Dear Readers,

If anyone asks me where the summer went, I know what became of mine.

Here's what I did: Like many of you, I worked to save the West's wild horses by speaking out at BLM Wild Horse Advisory Board meetings, schools, the Western State Horse Expo, Reno Rodeo, Battle of the Barns, Elderhostel, ElderCollege, and more. Along with many organizations and individuals, I helped educate government representatives on environmental and humane issues surrounding wild horses.

That doesn't make me special. I had lots of company and most of them worked a lot harder than I did.

Still, I taught, prayed, and persuaded, as hard as I could. Then, I danced with joy when the House of Representatives backed the ROAM act to restrict BLM gathers and reopen the horses' ancestral lands.

Cool, I thought! We're halfway there. Now, the Senate will vote to end the multi-million dollar helicopter round-ups and "warehousing" of wild horses.

But then, before the Senate had a chance to vote, BLM rushed to trap THOUSANDS of wild horses. One round-up was delayed by two days, due to a Federal lawsuit, but elsewhere mustangs have been hurriedly captured, processed and shipped.

I know wonderful people at BLM. Some volunteer to help horses and burros. Some work to change the Bureau from the inside, butthere aren't enough of them to stop those who are sneaking around the will of the people, laying down OUR money to destroy what WE love.

So what can you do about it?

Think: Do you think wild horses should be rounded up? If so, how? If not, should their numbers be limited with contraception? If not, should taxpayers' money be spent to do things they don't believe in? If BLM doesn't have the money to care for the horses they have in long term holding pens now, should they spend more money on rounding up more horses? Do you believe in Madeleline Pickens' sanctuary idea?

Decide what you believe, then stand up and speak your mind!

Share your ideas with:

Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar

Call: 202-208-3100 and leave a message with one of his aides or contact BLM Director Bob Abbey.

It only takes a minute and you are totally brave enough to do it!

Hugs,
Terri

This just in . . .

I dont know if you have anything like that where you could tell people about it, that is if your still interested in writing a special edition. even if your not you might like to read some of the things kids said about your books on the petition page. Thanks so much!

WILD FOAL UPDATE: A lot of you have asked how the orphan foals are doing. They have so many friends, that Palomino (Chilly Pepper's adopted mom) is starting a rescue just for them and you can read more about it here. I was lucky enough to go on a school visit along with several wild horse orphans.

Here's Chilly Pepper being kissed at a school visit by wild horse angel Shirley Allen.

Shirley with her orphan Rio.

Here's Chilly Pepper ready for her entrance in the Wild Horse Sanctuary parade:

Sam is an intern at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, California and she and her sister both love wild horses!

Sam's blog

"I'm not a joiner!"

That's what Jen told me when I tried to convince her that we should join a 4H chapter in Darton. I was never that interested before, but I'd been talking to Brynna about this great idea and well, I really needed Jen for back-up.

I didn't know what to say, but I must have looked stubborn or something, because she kept going and said,

"If I were a wild horse, I'd be a bachelor!"
