Phantom Stallion E-Newsletter September 2011

Dear Readers,

Happy September!

In the U.S., September is the month that students traditionally return to school after a summer break. That starts a whole school year of learning and answering questions posed by teachers. Just for fun, though, in my September newsletter, I'll let you ask the questions!

What was the last book you read?

Trouble by Gary Schmidt and I loved it! Trouble finds all of the characters in the book even though it takes place in a perfect seaside town to a perfect family, whose kids go to perfect school with winning sports teams. It only takes one accident to blow the cover off the town's racial tension, the school's big split between those with lots of money and those with less, the family with a bully brother such a bully he grinds out love, a sister with backbone to defy everyone. Even the dog that survived her intentional drowning doesn't have an easy time of it!

What genre do you refuse to read?

Any book, of any genre, which glorifies violence. I'm not too fond of boring books, either!

What was the last concert you saw live?

Lacy J. Dalton. She sings contemporary country and writes her own music and lyrics. She's amazing. Before that, I saw a flamenco guitar and dancing performance. And before that, a lineup of totally unknown rock bands playing in a park. If it's live music, I almost always enjoy it!

What's your favorite quotation and who said it?

This week's favorite quotation"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." - Fred Rogers ("Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood")

What do you wear for work clothes?

When I'm at my computer in my office, writing, I wear sweats or jeans & fleece in the winter, shorts and tshirts in the summer. When I appear in public, I wear a suit or slacks with a blazer, but I almost always top off my businessy clothes with turquoise earrings or a beaded bracelet -- something that shows I'm a writer from the West .

Do you listen to music when you write?

Not always, but pretty often. Right now l'm listening to Native American flute music while I'm writing, but I love cds with sounds from Nature -- ocean waves, birdsong, thunder -- while I write, too.

What are the best and worst parts of being an author?

I have lots of bests. I love meeting my readers, writing my wildest dreams, and riding across the Nevada range or through the Hawaiian rainforest for research .

The worst? Hmm, it might be that I'd need a clone to write all the characters and stories in my imagination!

Wild Horses in the News!

My sources say that the wild island horses of Shackleford, Corolla and Chincoteague survived their battering by Hurricane Irene just as they have stood up to storms for generations: http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2011/08/29/chincoteague-ponies-safe-after-hurricane-irene/

September contest

Terri Farley's stories are often set in real places. The photos below show one of those settings.

For this month's contest, look at the photos below, think about the WILD HORSE ISLAND stories and then try to recall WHO was injured in a place like this.

Once you have the answer, click here to Email Terri.

The sixth and twelfth correct answers to this question will win an autographed copy of one of Terri's books!

The setting in the old days

The setting as it is today, and the way it looked during a painful accident

Sam's blog - Encore Edition (September 2008)

Some days are just worse than others, and today day was one of them.

On the first day of the second week of school, I left my backpack at home. I borrowed paper and pencils from Jen, but I didn't have my books. And it's not like my teachers know me well enough, yet, that they completely believed I did the homework.
